I can say for now. Disney is back. This film was truly a century in the making. Disney's magic is back for now. It does not deserve any of the hate, nor get slept on.
The humor was somewhat cheesy. But the kids at the cinema i was in had a good laugh. Even some adults. I cracked a few chuckles here and there. After all it is a family movie. There was a mix of somewhat cheesy. To sort of dark humor at certain points. Yes the comedy is not top tier. But Disney is not exactly known for it's humor. It is at least not to bothersome.
The movie was fast paced. But i like how the plot does not waste any time. And gets right to the point. Yet can stay efficient in what it has to do. Surprisingly it doesn't miss out on anything. You should not get bored from such a fast movie with that much to process. But i will warn you, you gotta pay good attention. The majority of the criticism is the result of missing out on details, that answer the criticism, due to the fast pace.
The characters were interesting. All characters serve their narrative purpose well. All have distinct personalities. And aren't as bland as some say. It would probably be thought of as to little at first. But i do not think we needed anything to dramatic on the nose. None of them are forgotten. And do still have importance. And their arcs are thankfully resolved. Different kind of characters have different needs to be written well. And i'd say it was just right.
This film has such an original and true theme around wishes. The wishes aren't the desires we think we want at first. But rather our true wish comes from the best part in all of us. And are a window to the best way of true happiness. If you really think about it. It is actually true. Disney alway had that theme around wishes in it's movies. And we finally get to see a spiritual origin for it. There where two perspectives on wishes. One being that they're burdens to get rid of. Due to the journey to making your wish come true, being to unfair, or hard to achieve. And it is better to just forget a wish that can't come true. Unless it is deemed "worthy" from simpleness. The other being that everyone deserves a chance, at making their own dreams come true. Not necessarily all of them being granted just like that. Wishes aren't burdens. The only burden is you thinking you can't make it come true, and what you don't do for it. And living with it. Being content is not the same as actually being happy.
All i learned from most of the dislike for the soundtrack, is that hating on pop music is overrated. The lyrics do make sense when you think about it. The songs are used very well for a musical, very tied to their point in the story, and the music was pretty good too. It's not that bad. Some of the musical numbers give more classic vibes. And others are a little more modern. But i don't mind.
The posters in person look stunning. As for the animation in regular cinema, it will look somewhat better than online. But i recommend going to a cinema with a big screen, or an IMAX or Dolby Theater to get the best out of it. It looks so much better. More noticable details. Looks like 3d models with 2d watercolor painted on them. Both characters, setting, and background. And the cinematography is a mix of traditional style, and modern style cinematography for animation.
Over all, i had a good time. This film is better than people online give it credit for. It's not a perfect film. But it is really good. Proper way to celebrate the 100th year.
