Pretty good book. Well written. Once, while I was in class, I was thinking about what might happen next time I read the book and because tartt had made Theo such a three dimensional character, I felt like I could leave the classroom and just call him to ask about how everything was going. Like what was he going to do with the painting now etc. Pretty wild experience, I’ve never had with any other author. I will say one thing to Donna tartt: learn to kill your darlings. Both the goldfinch and the secret history (ESPECIALLY TSH) could’ve, and probably should’ve been shorter. It sometimes seems to me like tartt would really benefit from having a strict editor who made her cut out all the unnecessary scenes and minor plots because they don’t serve anyone anything except making it harder to focus on the actual plot and characters and the main points of the books.

Honestly I’d probably say like 3/5 but I just had to do something more drastic considering the way way way too high rating of this book. I mean, is it compelling? Yeah, I guess. But not because you are rooting for the characters or their journey and once the plot is over (which is exactly halfway through the book) tartt drags the reader through roughly 200 pages of irrelevant scenes instead of dealing with how the aftermath of the plot affect the psyche of the characters. Because of this lack of proper exploration of the characters and too much focus on random events and every day scenes irrelevant to the plot, the ending is seemingly random. At best, the reader might make up a plausible reason for the ending themselves. The reason it is compelling is because of the aesthetic. I did not root for the characters. I did not even know how the second half of the book was related to the plot. You have to be a very good reader to get something out of this rather disappointingly executed book. I mean, am I happy I read it? Sure. Would I recommend it? Maybe if you’re really into Ancient Greece and Latin.

This is THE all-time best movie adoption of THE all-time best book. Everything is so subtle and understated, and the actors are simply superb. The flow is on point, and the story is somehow gripping although stripped of the unnecessary drama most romantic movies indulge in. Incredibly emotionally eventful, all the while being the least traditionally eventful movie I have ever watched. I need to stress that this is the best writing since I don't even know when. I watch this movie and read the book every single summer, because it is so amazingly well written and so well adapted in the movie. (Also the book leaves you with the same life experiences as Elio, even though you haven't actually experienced the same as him, but only read about it. It is so believable because his thought streams appear so raw, morally grey and therefore realistic).

I don't regret watching the movie, but it has so much unfulfilled potential. The true story behind the movie is so obscene and tragic, and the actors were truly good, but the flow of the movie was unfortunately just as tragic as the story. About halfway through the movie, I was getting bored. It didn't feel cohesive, and dragged out dialogues, that could have been half as long. The trailer was everything you would hope, the movie would be, but unfortunately wasn't. I know this was a harsh review, but considering the cast, trailer, and original story, you ought to be disappointed, when you find yourself restless halfway through the movie. It was fine but disappointing.
