June 2024 Edit:
They have finally patched the game to address the issues I had before, It is now a 5 star game.
Companies REALLY need to stop rushing things to launch. Imagine if it launched in its current state?
Pros:
- Best ARPG campaign I've ever played
- Graphics are right where you want them to look beautiful but not lag your PC
- Talent system is deep and complex with lots of layers to your build
- All classes seem fun
Cons:
- Level scaling of monsters limits any time your character feels powerful to just one level when you may have got 3 or 4 gear upgrades at the same time. As soon as you level up again, the monsters scale, and any power creep you had is negated. I have no incentive to grind up to World Tier 4, because it is not giving me any new content, its just giving more of the same 45 min long levels. There needs to be some point, where your character stars to outpace the strength of the monsters you are fighting. Otherwise its just a time sink, not progression.
- Monster variety is non-existent, by the time I was done the campaign at level 45, it was very clear to me that, with the exception of Elias and Lilith, I had been doing the same 3 or 4 boss fights over and over and over again. Likewise every single pack of monsters is the exact same fight, there are no new challenges, no different mechanics, just sameness
- Making legendary gear be aspects that you can extract and move to another item at will, completely negates any kind of sense of reward when you find an item. The whole thing that made the gameplay loop in every previous game fun, was that you never knew what was gonna drop. Now you don't even care what drops, cause you already have your aspects.
These are by no means things that cannot be fixed, but they are also so bad right now that playing has become quite simply boring and tedious. Every time I am fighting I keep thinking "I don't want to do this for another 40 odd levels".
I hope they can fix it with patches, because I honestly am in love with that campaign. Blizzard's best showing in years for sure, but still not on the mark in my opinion.
However unfortunately I think Diablo 4 will suffer from the same problem all games have now. They do not plan to release the real 'full game' for 4 or 5 or 6 seasons. All the issues I've mentioned will likely be gone by then.
