relativistic speeds and their mechanical interactions must be done more realistically than this. You can't leave a ship travelling ftl ( some time plus 54 months from the core to the rim) to float sedately into an asteroid field!!!!
Its stuff like this that lets down what could have been great. Especially such a hard story that started strongly.
