This is not what I wanted from DooM Eternal.
Having been a huge fan of Doom, Doom II, Doom 64, Doom 3 and Doom 2016 - I had a reasonable expectation of what to expect. With the exception of Doom 3, every entry has been a run-and-gun style FPS with little in the way of strategy and more in the way of firepower versus demons. Doom 3 went with more of a survivor horror theme, which worked for me at that time, and even though it was different I enjoyed the hell out of it.
DooM Eternal is a different beast, focusing more on agility, environmental factors, accuracy, and ammunition management with a lore that really didn't need to be told, done in a really convoluted way.
Oh.... and platforming.
I'm not trying to be a contrarian. I can definitely see the appeal. But, this feels much more like Halo 4 than Doom. It sounds stupid, but this game gives you too much. Too many abilities, too many powerups, too many modifications, too many F$%^king buttons to press. The ONLY button I should be worried about is the trigger.
Run-and-gun is no longer a viable strategy. It's a real shame because that's how I like to play. Enemies now have 'weak points', forcing you in to a style of play that just doesn't suit me. incrementally disabling enemies one-by-one is a style of play I'm really not interested in.
Doom 2016 is by far the superior game. Mechanically, Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are worlds apart. Don't get me wrong, I know most people will love this game, but if you're after an old school style shooter - forget it.
