No spoilers btw! I was honestly a bit ify going into this one, but when all is said and done I loved this flick. It's very aware of what it is and it's not trying to be anything more. And on that note, it is a very self aware movie. I don't really like the tired trope in gay (specifically male) teen rom-coms (sounds very specific but it's a thing haha) of "boy is in denial, boy comes to terms, boy comes out or gets outed, boy ends up with perfect romantic interest then big kiss. Roll credits." I see this in Alex Strangelove, Love Simon, Love Victor (though it's a t.v series) and many more. Instead, this movie focuses on the trend/trope of gay best friend. (Think Will & Grace). It doesn't end with the expected couple and instead takes a more natural route, giving it a very real and genuine feel. The only reason I gave this movie 4 instead of 5 stars is it's because it's not really life changing. It's no Brokeback Mountain, but then again, I think that's the point. It's supposed to be a chill movie for teens going through similar things. But I do 100% recomend GBF. Thank you for listening to my TED talk.
