I REALLY enjoyed this show and wish I watched it sooner. It’s empowering to any mother going through a similar situation, with the odds stacked completely against her. It’s the perfect example of how being with the wrong person, particularly one that is emotionally and mentally abusive, can take away every last bit of you. It’s the example of how a smart girl can be dragged down by making the wrong choice in choosing a partner and how your upbringing and childhood trauma impacts your view of yourself and your self-worth forever.
*Spoiler Alert*
There were moments of frustration for sure…why not stay with your dad despite his past if he’s stable now and you’re desperate? Why not stay with Nate who can give you everything? Why not find a new job that is more stable and less physically demanding? As the show comes to a close you realize that she couldn’t stay with her dad because even at the end, he would betray her. She couldn’t be with Nate because she needed to grow on her own, and her job gave her all of the opportunities she came to know and her connections saved her in the end and made her free. I’ve seen a lot of commentary on how cold Alex was to Sean at the end, well he deserved every last bit of it. She did not owe him a hug or even a smile for that matter. He was abusive, manipulative and selfish. His addiction was not Alex’s problem to fix. In fact, he ruined her and Matty’s opportunities for a better life a number of times. Alex owed him nothing. The ONLY thing I wish happened was a final court testimony. Much of the time, abusers do not just “drop” their rights and it really does take a court fight. I think that would have been a powerful ending however the doesn’t change my feelings towards the overall series. This show is worth a watch and is full of heart.
