Based on Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy considered by some to be the best science fiction classic of all time, Foundation comes to television with an amazing fusion of current special effects well blended into the backdrop of this adaptation that attempts to provide a depth of humanization to the more simply written books that left much to the imagination. In some ways, the translation from the written work to the big screen suffers from the politically correct interpretation and deviation from the original story outline. At the same time, standing on its own and using the most broad plot outlines from Asimov, the television script offers a quite different vision of a parallel Foundation universe that offers both typical, conventional scenes of relationships, and two dimensional action but also a suggestion of intellectual and emotional depth beyond Asimov and perhaps knowing that the second movie version of Dune was being released the same year. Asimov's easy to read, comprehend, and follow written narrative has become a visual feast but much more convoluted, harder to follow, but sometimes a tenderly edgy experience that may be worth watching if detached from its original source material.
