An artistic film that is suited towards a certain type of cinephile however Doctor Faustus does showcase another side to Richard Burton that had otherwise been hidden throughout his career. His genuine love of Shakespeare and all those associated with the writer shine through his role as Faustus and Elizabeth Taylor’s otherworldly makeup and costumes make a mostly dull film rather enjoyable.

It took two days for me to finish this film and though it is my least favorite film of the three made by Liz and Monty, it does deserve some praise for its beautiful scenery and set designs that perfectly style the 1860s theme. The plot was weak at times but the ending made the long watch worth while and this is definitely on my list of films to rewatch.

I have seen this film more times than I can count and always enjoy rewatching it. Elizabeth’s costumes are immaculate and the scenery is breathtaking. Though the film has a shallow plot that is as thin as paper, the film is deserving of some recognition for its incredible cinematography and chemistry between actors which was felt on and off screen.

Recently discovered this film on TCM and it was a lovely watch. Felt the plot was spaced out at times but overall it is a very good film and Elizabeth Taylor’s performance throughout the picture and her chemistry with Van Johnson could be felt through the screen and was most definitely deserving of an Oscar nom.

Have enjoyed this movie through three watches and plan for many more. The cinematography is beautiful and really showcases the beauty of Big Sur and the plot perfectly encapsulates the realistic view of Liz and Dick at this time. Definitely an underrated film by today’s standard but feel it is worth a watch for cinephiles.
