I cannot shut up about this movie. I’ve watched it a handful of times now over the years and it only ever continuously gets better. Swiss Army Man is a truly honest biography of the human condition; perfectly charming and nonsensical and balanced. From a strictly cinematic point of view it is nothing short of phenomenal! The shots, soundtrack, colour grading, scripting and acting are top notch and can easily compete with major studios.
I think this movie is best watched as a stand alone event. You will not find the answers that we’ve come to expect in media, and so it’s best not to think too technically. I think this perfectly touches on the essence of Swiss Army Man. The juxtaposition of raw, weighty emotions mixed in with bodily humour and innocence leaves you questioning your own responses to the film. It somehow uses an opening combination of suicide and farts to delve into topics of love, loneliness, sex, lying, excitement, fear, shame and death. All the while it seems to almost be a parody of itself (and is genuinely incredibly funny).
I seriously couldn’t recommend anything more highly. This is the most wonderful piece of art that I’ve ever fallen in love with. I’m saddened that not everyone will feel it the way that I do, but if you do, you’re in for such a great laugh and a refreshed perspective on being human!
