I'm so confused by this film. All of the woke ideology, man-bashing, and anti-patriarchy preaching aside, the movie was BIZZARE. The plot was not interesting, the jokes were embarrassing and the characters were very stereotypical. And why Michael Cera's character was in this movie - who the heck knows?! It felt like I was watching several different movie styles meshed into one which made no sense.
I'm furious at how much PLASTIC was used to create the sets in this film - what a total waste and so destructive on the environment. Overall, the film's message was unclear...do we hate men? Do we need men? Are men easy to manipulate? Do women use sex as a way to get things they want? Are women supposed to stay quiet and look pretty? Can women who have professional jobs maintain femininity or is that reserved for thin, subservient, young women?
It felt like a very distinct line was drawn between male and female roles, but I felt like I was supposed to want to blur that line in order to fit in with society's new way of looking at gender identity.
The traditional male and female role concepts are ones that we're supposed to be collectively evolving from and I thought this film was in favor of that, but when it came down to it - these themes were reinforced, so what gives?? And the very last scene was so uncalled for...it was offensive and unnecessary and made me wonder if the whole thing was a shameless plug for women to get pap smears and mammograms. I expected so much more from Greta Gerwig, but I know she's at the mercy of those who fund these projects.
This movie had so much potential...it had a great deal of responsibility to those who chose to see it. I realize that a movie about Barbie and her friends is not one to be taken seriously...but God, give us some type of cohesive clarity with regards to gender roles and respect.
I feel let down. If this review reads as confusing, it's because I still can't comprehend what I watched for 2 hours.
However, Ryan Gosling did a fabulous job of portraying a dumb, sensitive, starry-eyed Ken in love with Barbie who learns how to become macho and "take back his male power." And Margot Robbie looked stunning...I want to dress like Barbie all day, every day. 💕
