OFMD has captured the attention and acclaim of a large audience while providing good, varied representation of queer people that isn't about them suffering for it and doesn't kill them off left and right.
It's (mostly) a comedy but it's never a joke that someone is queer or not white or not a man. Stereotypical queerness is not the entire center of anyone's personality. I've seen other queer-centric shows miss these marks by a mile somehow.
It addresses trauma in varied ways both seriously and comedically without mocking it.
It features romantic and sexual relationships without assuming an adult audience wants to watch several minutes of on-screen sex every episode.
It's cute and endearing and funny and evokes emotions as strong as any epic romance or drama. It has a lot of heart, and it stands out, because there is so little like it.
