I love a good historical roman fiction drama, but this show is the worsr. After episode 9 of the Peacock's Those About to Die, I was over it. I binged it one day i had nothibg better to do, and i can whole-heartedly say this show is trash.
While given, there are aspects of this show that are probably truer to reality in the level of cruelty and barbarism, it goes too far for a fictional series and for no good reason.
In modern television and movies, there exist a dichotomy between how television portrays graphic violence and nudity, specifically female nudity. These shows put women on full display and show graphic violence at a nauseating level
This show epitomizes that.
We are inundated with female nudity and women as objects of male pleasure, and male violence that is just excessive, even for a roman drama.
The queer-coded villian, aDomitian, is problematic and culturally we should be beyond this. He is soulless, self-ish, narcissitic and everything you would expect from television. They always have to make the overtly queer character a villian you hate in the subtle programing toward homophobia and queer violence. In the show, Domitian seeks power over the affectionand control he has for his partner who he treats like property. Its 2024 We can tell stories that don't just revolve around violence and sex, especially sex where the partners are not equal in it, and stories were queer people arent the worst of villians.
Episode 9 really ends it for me while i watched 10 hoping for some resolution, i was not only disappointed, it made me angry.
Throughout the series, the writing makes no sense, and characters are put at odds with each other to no end other than to upset the viewer. The writing just makes no sense overall and the acting is even worse in mist cases. Which cinfuses me becauae there are good actors in the series. What happened?
This show is the worst parts of ever roman drama that came before it, without the clever plot twist, story angles, and endearment to the characters.
No one in the show is likeable and any one who is, is killed. Which only serves to make the show unlikable because their characters couls be utilized in future seasons to make the show more interesting in the long run.The ending leaves you no one to root for in upcoming seasons and its just a mess.
And who are the two audience members we spend so much time watching. They aren't the worst part of the series but they are the worst attempt at comic relief in a series where you all already tired of the characters midway through.
To its credit, the scenic and costume departments did their job. Both are excellent. I wish CGI put in a little more effort because the CGI is tragic. VIdeography has its moments, but editing is a bit aamateurish for a project at this level.
This show had every capacity to be good and its just bad. I am angry i paid for a month of peacock to watch the series and i kinda want my money back.I won't be making that mistake again and cancelling my subscription immediately.
Its really that bad.
