I have been waiting for this show for years since I heard that they were gonna try and make the silmarillion. I'm a huge Tolkien fan and have loved every movie that they have come out with. I knew the general plot and character lay out in advance of this and was excited to see it after seeing the last trailer.
But i confess that I was disappointed. The story is really lacking in the LOTR universe vibe. The visuals are stunning and do much to offset the script, but its really really bland. It has the feel of a very cinematic, but very generic fantasy. Plus, I know not everything has to be battles, but it definitely helps keep excitement up. There is certainly a lack of it. We were teased a bit in the first few minutes of the show when they show a battle with the elves first returning to middle earth, but then it dries up after that. A big let down.
As for the characters, they aren't really that likeable. The only one I actually really like is Arondrir and thats because he seems the most legitimate character. He acts exactly like I would expect an elf to and has the beginning of a compelling story. Elrond is cringe in how he appears. More like a greasy politician then a wise lord.
Staying with the portrayal of the elves, I like that they have stuck to canon and made Galadriel powerful in this, and she displays it against the snow troll, but why are the other elves so bad? These are top end warriors who were chosen to accompany her, why do they suck so much? The fellowship, comprising of hobbits fared better in Moria. As well, why isnt she using some more sorcery? She is fighting like a normal elf when she is 1000x more powerful then this, even at the 'younger' age. I don't expect to see Galadriel brawling, I expect to see her tossing some sorcery a la the Dol Goldur scene. If they wanted to really show her young and impetuous, they should show her unleashing cataclysmic sorcerous attacks on people. It would make her character so much more compelling.
One final comment on her character and the elves. There is ZERO chance Galadriel ever lets Gil-Galad send her to Valinor. Like she would just laugh and walk away. She is literal elven royalty in her own right, he can't order her from middle earth. Nor do they need permission to leave.
So overall, as a die hard fan, they have made it really hard for me to support this show. It feels like it was a show written by someone who only had the faintest idea of what it was supposed to be about. Where they lack the knowledge of the details, they instead just filled in generic fantasy and gloss over the fine stuff. Really hope they turn it around as they go.
