The storyline in the book was educationally and culturally accurate, and reflects how sad life choices were for intelligent women even well into the late 80’s. (I haven’t checked the wage difference lately but I don’t think we’re there yet). I tire of hearing sob stories from men who claim they can’t get a position because a “woman (or person of color) was given” the job. For all of western history only men had any positions in academia or any field of intellectual thought or of power. For how long were women or people of color held back? And for how much longer will women and people of color/religion, continue to be held back in the USA and more especially in authoritarian/patriarchal countries? If you’re moved by the series or the book then please read the notes about Pauli Murray on Wikipedia. She was the first mixed race, woman lawyer/priest ordained in the Episcopal Church. That’s a real life story of sexual and racial discrimination overcome.
