K-12 makes a mark. It deals with glaring social and political issues with great visuals, choreography and some great music. However, Melanie Martinez tries to tackle too many subjects that a cohesive plot or dialogue are barely there. By the end of the runtime, you’re left with more questions than answers. Plus some scenes, most notably Show & Tell, had no purpose in the movie to move along the plot.
In conclusion, K-12 is a fun watch. It has decent humor and tackles many important issues with a lot of care and great music. However, from an actual movie standpoint, K-12 lacks any real character development or plot progression. There’s two sequels planned for this movie, hopefully she fixes on the apparent issues and delivers. I do recommend watching it if you’re a fan of Melanie or just like visual albums, because this one is by far one of the most ambitious ones i’ve seen.
