Of course many of us were, but many elites came from long lines of educated, finished, graceful families, who often stemmed from second & later sons of British aristocrats. Dutch merchants. Et al. We all go back to “somebody” scoundrel, generals, indentured servants, pirates, religious zealots, traders, naval heroes, horse thieves and whiskey kings wed to daughters of wealthy business and political successes. Women often married down, due to lack of eligible men.
