There are some movies that, even with a weak storyline, there’s enough well written dialogue and strong performances that overshadow the weak or overused plot—think Reservoir Dogs. Horizon is not one of those movies.
The depth of this film begins and ends with the title. A western about easterners looking to the west for their futures—their dreams just visible over the horizon. Tired yet? I was not 15 minutes in.
This film played out like a television miniseries, which would have been favorable to the actors, giving audiences time to get to know them, to care about them and their dreams.
Once the film ended, I couldn’t have cared less about any of them—much less chapter 2.
Costner spent too much time trying to one up Sheridan instead of developing characters and dialogue. Only those just like him loved Rip on initial watch. They were given time to get to know who he really was. Costner never gave any of his characters that opportunity.
