I watched this as a teen when this first came out, I related to it with the same circumstance of my parents divorce resulting in moving to the South. I always thought it was a good movie, a little disjointed but couldn't really place why. Watching now, in 2023 I can. Everyone who knew Birdie saw what happened to her and not a single person was kind. They all had expectations of her and are rude. The interactions she has with Justin are the most uncomfortable, seduction isn't endearing but somehow you were made to think it was okay at each scene. Bernice's circumstance is really tough and I was always upset for her. The bullying and feeling like speaking up is a double edge sword. The scene that cheers her up was a great moment but feels inappropriate at the same time. Many times through out you actually aren't sure what to feel or what the message is. But the scenery and a good soundtrack is a mind trick into thinking you watched a good film.
