If you're looking for spoiler free move along because it's impossible to summarize this ( and all the hate) without them.
This game has gotten alot of hate. It's gotten torn down, ripped apart and litteraly tossed int he trash. The reason are usually the same.
1. Joel's death
2. Playing as Joel's killer
3. Story line / flow
I played the first game when it was released. I played the remastered for PS4. I love Ellie and Joel. I love them dearly. This game does not question the players love for the main characters. It does show you there are other characters in this universe that care and love each other; characters like the protagonist Abby who , very much like Ellie, deeply care and love people around them. This game, if it does anything, forces you to look at the story of Ellie and Joel from both sides. It's pretty clear from very early on this game is about revenge. Not only is a revenge quest it shows you the cost of that revenge. Sometimes you pay the price, but usually it's someone close to you that pays more. That's really what is at the heart of this is the cost of our hatred and anger and those who have to forfeit the most. It begs the question is all of it really worth it? Is Joel's life worth less than Abby's fathers ? is Ellie more entitled to revenge than Abby? Are my friends blood and tears worth more than the tears I shed for someone I loved; or someone I'm trying to kill? What am I willing to do in order to get even.. is there going to be an even when I'm done? This game isn't anything like the first one except in it's mechanics. It's gritty , raw, and forces you to hear and feel the consequences of your own violence; you own your hatred. You reap the blood of those in your path and at various times you seem to realize that something is happening to you as a character in your quest for revenge. Actions have consequences. They are not always fair and they're not always good. From the dogs you kill and hear their owners mourn, to the guy begging for his life before you cut him down with a hatchet... This is not a stand back and shoot everyone . You will see and hear what you're hatred and anger are causing. This game forces you to look at moral questions and sometimes , you might not like your answers. That's I think one of the biggest accomplishments in any type of art; making use question and examine what we believe in our own hearts. I think naughty dog did that.. unfortunately, alot of people won't enjoy the introspective look at morality.
