This ranks for me personally as one of the best war films I've ever seen. After watching it, even the next day, it hit me so hard that I found myself just thinking about it.
I don't think I've watched another war film that so brilliantly captures the brutality and pointlessness of human suffering in war like this film does. And being in German language without a bunch of Hollywood actors added an additional layer of authenticity and power to the film.
Overall, this is slower than some other well-known war films out there but the way it captures suffering for me was so powerful and in such an emotionally deep way that makes this an unforgettable film.
