I hated this movie. Hated. It started out intriguing, the acting was good. It was definitely different than how it was marketed but not in a bad way. There was good chemistry in the cast. But it just got so twisted in knots trying to be edgy and artsy. The dumb wind storm with trash bandying about - is it New Rochelle or a post apocalyptic wasteland? Why is there so much trash flying? The final scenes of the match are at once too frenetic with all the different camera angles and too slow - excruciatingly slow to the point that I was like my GOD when will this movie end - because of the absurd number of slow motion shots of those frenetic camera angles. How many angles do we need to see the characters dripping CGI sweat in slo-mo from? Further complicating things is the many, many time jumps, making the timeline of some pretty key interactions quite uncertain. The jerking back and forth from various points in the past to the present and back made it needlessly hard to follow. The soundtrack was also utterly bizarre - loud thumping techno music during highly tense emotional moments was unique at first but then became over done, like almost everything else. It's a shame because as I said the acting was good. Zendaya played a pretty unlikeable woman to perfection. The plot had a lot of potential. It just felt like the director wanted to be so cool that he chopped up the movie to make it very different and edgy rather than focus on the story. Finally, the ending is soooo hokey and cringingly stupid that any bit of goodwill I had for the movie evaporated on the spot. I am baffled how this movie has a positive metacritic and rotten tomatoes rating.
