Disclaimer: this is one story you really need to read the book to fully grasp.
Woolf’s Orlando was so far ahead of its time that even the 1992 film adaption was a controversial piece. At least I imagine it was, given that I was not alive at the time.
I found that the movie carried over most of the important plot points from Woolf’s original work in a way that a modern audience would understand. I would have liked a bit more character development for the Archduchess/Archduke and Shelmerdine, though I enjoyed the absence of Nick Greene.
I really loved how they added Orlando’s child at the end. It was
especially endearing that the child was so androgynous. Furthermore, I thought the addition of fake home video footage felt very fitting for the 90s area the film was created in, though the angel at the end was extremely weird.
As someone who was watching the movie after reading the novel, I give it three stars. I would then add two stars, one for the perfect casting of Orlando and Queen Elizabeth, and another for all the breathtaking costumes. However, I have to subtract one star for the weird angel thing at the end.
Again, what was the deal with with the angel? Was there something I missed from the novel? Is it supposed to symbolize Vita of Virginia? I think they both would have found the angel silly, tbh.
