I remember seeing this at the cinema back in 2005 and thought it was pretty good. I've seen it in bits and pieces since then as it gets played on TV semi-regularly but recently sat down to watch it properly again. The film is quite darker than I remembered but still has a lot of action, wonder and charm. The main cast of children are alright, the youngest Lucy is probably the best actor of the bunch, but overall it the was the supporting cast of both real and animated characters that I was most interested in. The CGI still looks surprisingly good for a 2005 film and so do the costumes, although there are occasions when the action moves quickly in which the CGI starts to show it's age. The plot revolves around a family of children who find a seemingly normal wardrobe that is actually a doorway to a magical medieval world called Narnia. The kids, unbeknownst to them, are actually part of an ancient prophecy detailing that they will save Narnia from the Ice Queen. The kids learn fighting skills, meet new friends, make some mistakes, redeem themselves and then all take part in a big battle to save the day. Theres a number of side and main characters but the coolest is no doubt, Aslan the Lion, voiced by one of my favourite actors, Liam Neeson. Although the movie is dark in tone, the violence is more implied than actually seen as I don't recall seeing any blood other than the occasional trickle from one of the kids lips or nose. My favourite scene is the big battle at the end. It was sort of one-sided and you never really felt the good guys were in trouble but it was still a fun action sequence.
Final Verdict: Much darker than most childrens movies but I actually didn't mind because it kept me engaged. It has a sense of childlike wonder combined with interesting characters and very good special effects. The movie drags at times, particularly when the kids arn't in Narnia, and for a high action film there's lack of gore (it is a kids film of course) but I can highly recommend this.
