This (2023 Christmas) version of The Color Purple is an asset to the text, the stage play and the initial film. The caliber of actors and actresses is extremely high. Each segment was shared in such a way that it was more family friendly (than the original film) as well as upscale. The musical scenes were all excellent, yet never over-powering. Fantasia made a melodic showing unlike any other. Taraji definitely bought into her character a little later into the film, but when she did, she stole the show. There was class added in the scenes with Taraji (Shug) and Fantasia (Ms. Sealy) by the tub and in the movie theater scene.
Harpo really stood out in how he took the love that Fantasia gave him as a step mother and demonstrated that love towards others in his own life.
This is a movie to see twice. It's for sisters, for families and friends. It's a movie to learn how to love and how not to love. It's a movie about the fact that people can change. It's quite heart felt.
If you're going to do a movie, this is how you do it!
Thanks to the author of the book, the screen writers, the back stage workers, the actors, make-up artists, the producers and everyone involved in bringing this magical masterpiece to the screen.
