How do we start?
The film’s opening with Owen Grady helping to round up a BioSyn-engineered Parasaurolophus was a fun, enticing scene to start of the disappointment of a product this film proves itself to be.
I’ll try to stay relatively spoiler-free with this review, however I advise you scroll away if you are looking to view the film with fresh eyes on the 10th.
The base plot was decent enough, however the Giga was in no way directly relevant and/or was a villain. The Giganotosaur was purely a marketing grabber to string together an irrelevant, pointless climax and sell plastic figurines. The end fight, which we all knew was coming, was nothing particularly special other than a death scare and a single surprise at the end of it. There is no context to what was supposed to be the “final big battle” as it was short lived and undelivered. For what was marketed as the new “big bad villain” dinosaur, the Giga was overall useless to the movie.
The Atrociraptors were amongst the time wasters of the production. After having been the film’s mascot since the beginning they pose very little to nothing of the actual story. They are completely forgotten about after their first and only scene of the franchise, never to be even mentioned once more throughout the third act. For what is supposedly the conclusion to the franchise, the plotline to the Atrociraptors, as well as the underground market of dinosaurs, are completely abandoned and are never resolved. What happened to the Atrociraptors? Are they still being trained for war? Where will they be next? What will the do? Guess we’ll just never know.
Masie’s storyline was decent enough, we get to learn more about what she truly is and why she exists. It seems like they listened to fan’s critiques on her previous storywriting and decided to quickly tweak it into something more meaningful. What I did not like about the character was how much she changed. While it’s realistic to portray an isolated teenage girl the way they did, I more or less lost respect for her. She was entitled, misunderstanding, and flipped off Henry Wu, however it may have been deserved from her point of view. (That rhymed)
CGI was unpromising at some points in the film, however it’s clear they had to save some budget for other shots which were far more render-heavy. Locusts were absolutely stunning during their major scene towards the end, clearly forcing the directors to shift the budget around to places more than others.
The Giganotasaur, as I talked about previously, wasn’t the only major carnivore to be neglected until the end. Rexy was seen only once beforehand very briefly in a foreshadow fight against the Giga. After all the dinosaurs/prehistoric animals were called into the emergency containment, she and the Giga clashed it out very randomly and for no reason to tie with the plot. The Giga’s ultimate defeat was clever but unrealistic, and was over with very suddenly. No relevance to the plot other than the fact that two apex predators in a small containment area together do not mix well, and even that is me being generous.
Overall this movie is 2/5 stars. Would only recommend for those just seeking action sequences which the movie does bring to us very well most of the time.
This is all just my opinion and everyone is welcome to disagree, even though you’d be wrong.
