I'm a great Code Geass fan, but I honestly can't give this movie a five star rating. A great story is one that can leave mark on you for a long time, and the ending of R2 did it for me. It leave a deep deep mark. Never had I cried so much from an anime (other than One Piece episode for Merry and Ace's death). The death of Lelouch at the end of R2 leave a small hollow part in my heart, that years after I still feel stabbing pain just by hearing the word Code Geass.
I can't give this a five star, just because this is an ending that we DON'T NEED....but we WANT. R2 has such a great ending. The ending totally shows us the brilliance of Lelouch mind, through his long planning and stategy. It's such a twist that none can predicts, including us the viewer. This movie doesn't show much on his brilliance, it doesn't need to because we've had that in R2.
What it gives us is just the closure that we need, that he is indeed alive. By the end of R2 we saw CC travelling with someone. We kept guessing whether it is Lelouch and whether he is still alive. This movie is solely to give closure on this, and there's not much else there. There's not much explained about Geass, the world of C and even the villain can't compare to others before. It is almost like the plot was there to support the justification of his revival.
Well, at least after all these long years I can lay rest to the yearning in my heart. For the final closure on Lelouch. I'd say Lelouch here, not Code Geass, because this is the closure that I need. Now, my heart can start to mend again.
