this is arguably the best movie of 2019. it is jam packed with great actors, it is accompanied a fitting film score, the styling and the set are beautiful, lastly, the cinematography is outstanding.
easily my cup of tea in movies. this movie made murder mystery genre great again.
the film follows the family of harlan thrombey (plummer)—a wealthy and renowned novelist. the family is being investigated by the police because harlan thrombey died the night they celebrated his 85th birthday. his demise is deemed as suicide but private investigator benoit blanc (craig) is having a hard time believing that it is suicide. due to the fact that someone in the family hired him to look deeper to what really went down that night, he wouldn’t stop meddling with the police officers’ work since he was hired anonimously. that urged him to began investigating the family including harlan’s personal nurse, marta cabrera (de armas)—who, by the way, is living illegally in the country. during the first and middle act of the film, we learned that every family member had dilemma with harlan. thus creating reasons as to why a foul play is possible. harlan actually wanted to stop assisting everyone in the family financially when he was alive, since they were abusing his kindness. before the climax of the film, it is revealed during the will reading that all the liquid assets, cars and even the house will all be given to marta since she is named as the sole beneficiary by the late harlan. this will spark the tension between the family and marta. the latter will then be assisted by ransom drysdale (evans), the son of jamie lee curtis’ character and one of harlan’s grandchild. he is described as the black sheep of the family. he is also the only one who did not attend the funeral. all the family members have strong alibi. but the real questions here are, take note by the way, who hired benoit blanc? is harlan’s death a suicide or murder? why is ransom not in the funeral? and why did harlan make marta, her personal nurse, as the sole beneficiary of all his wealth?
and yeah, pay attention to the last scene since that shows the status of every character in that movie. and that final scene screams poetic cinema!!!!
the film is well-plotted, filled with hilarious and unforgettable dialogues, well-performed by the actors, well-scored, well-paced, and i consider it the epitome of modern murder mysteries.
it’s one for the ages.
