I watched this movie a couple of years ago and somehow today it showed on my Prime that I hadn't watched it so, I took that as a sign to watch it again. This time I read all the subtitles for the Spanish-speaking parts, something I didn't do last time.
My conclusion was the same. This movie is indeed a masterpiece. I heard the professional critics the last time and read some of their reviews today. I will not read another review from a "professional" critic again. They seem to miss the point of the entire movie. Yes, there is darkness in life and unexpected circumstances. One character meets the love of his life and loses her, he takes his life after. They have a daughter who has trauma from their deaths and through all of that, she found love. The guy who she found love with has his own story, his own trauma, and his own life. His mother told him through all life's burdens you cannot let it keep you down, you have to find a way to stand back up and if you can; when you do, you will find a way to flourish; you can find love. So, does this movie go back and forth? Does it make you pay attention throughout? To both, the answer is a yes, but it is worth it. If I could give a sixth star, I would.
