Deceptively simple at first glance, with glorious cinematography, fantastic sets/costumes, and an ensemble cast of great actors, this is in fact a complex group portrait of women in postwar Australia as old ways and old prejudices bite the dust. I was so surprised at Bruce Beresford's exquisitely light touch with this material -- since I associate him more with tough-guy pieces like BREAKER MORANT, etc. -- but really, LADIES IN BLACK is a pleasure from start to finish. Enjoy!
