Gene Roddenbury created Star Trek to try to show people what life could be like if we supported science, put aside petty superstitious differences, and self-actualized together as a species. JJ Abrams created this movie to show people what life would be like if, in the future, human culture is based around lens flare, alcoholism, and explosions. This is the Michael Bay version of Star Trek, and it's devoid of any of the reasons one would have to watch Star Trek over say Transformers.
