Mulaney is back with his master craft of storytelling but with, even as he points out early on, a different, more “sober” tone that is more or less spent towards his self deprecation and ability to find joy in the fine details in what other words would be a dark journey of sobriety.
Some might argue that he still leaves his guard up, just skimming the top of the horrible parts he had to endure and learn from, but he doesn’t owe that to anybody. He can be unapologetically a recovering addict without the tears. And he shows gratitude to those who helped him get there. That is most important.
This was something I had to listen to immediately twice. Usually most stand ups I listen to once and let go, but for those that I immediately go through again, like modern comics Chapelle and CK, Mulaney’s level of insight, ability to weave in and out of stories, and precise comedic timing, was for lack of a better word- addicting.
