After reading 'The Princess and the Goblin' by George MacDonald, it seemed only natural that I purchase his first book, and 'Phantastes' did not disappoint. It took me away to Fairy Land, where I encountered heroic knights, beautiful maidens, and fearsome creatures. The writing was so vivid that I felt completely immersed in the story; a feat, which few authors have been able to produce. I now understand why such literary greats as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, thought so highly of MacDonald; and being an aspiring author myself, George MacDonald's 'Phantastes' allowed me to see my own inferiority as a writer, and I humbly bow to the Master.
