I read few of the feedbacks of this movie, and some comments want to make the movie look like Clare and Irene have some kind of attraction. In my opinion, what they have is curiosity for each other. Clare was able to pass as a white, have money, be respect from white people and even married a white man. Which let Irene with the curiosity to know how she was able to do such things? how Clare lives with the true of being black and have to fake something she is not? Also, I don’t think Irene is jealous of Clare, I just believe she is angry that Clare decided to pass as a White and now she want to live freely as a Black women and she feel some resentment about that. In other hand, I perceive, Clare wanted so bad to make Irene understand her motives for her passing as a white, she wanted Irene to be the strong connection of her with her origen. Clare saw in Irene and Irene’s family an opportunity to be free, to be her again, without having to pretend, to be something she is not. That’s is my opinion about their relationship resentment from Irene and an opportunity to be free from Clare.
I want to point out that, Irene wasn’t even Jealous about her Husband and Clare. Irene was just mad at him for not listen to her and not be agree with her by keeping Clare away from them. In other hand, Irene’s Husband just was trying to be polite with Clare and he knew how important was Clare in Irene’s life so that’s why he wanted to keep her around. Maybe he was trying to make them be good friend as in the pass.
After me watching the last part of the movie many time trying to understand if Irene pushed Clare to the window, I got to the conclusion, I think what Irene was tried to do was to protect Clare from her husband and she tried to move Clare away from him, and unfortunately she felt but it’s wasn’t intencional. I don’t take out the fact that Irene was mad a Clare because she got tired of seen Clare enjoying being black when she decided to pass as white, but it’s wasn’t that bad for her to push Clare out of the window.
