The creature is a changeling.... and if you pay attention to the movie, you will understand the significance of the mirrors. The broken car mirror from the beginning is used to expose the changeling in her son. So she keeps mirrors everywhere to make sure people who come around are human...... duh. The mirrors are covered at the funeral because the changelings have probably taken over then entire town. I half way watched this and picked up this info.
