Genuinely one of the best films I've ever seen and my favorite film so far. There's something beautifully, achingly melancholic about this movie. The soundtrack (which is phenomenal and absolutely deserved an Oscar), the sweeping war-torn landscapes, and the soft banter between the two leads all work in perfect harmony to emphasize this tone.
The movie never focuses on any actual battles, just the aftermath, and that's another thing that attracts me to this movie. The destroyed French countryside feels almost post-apocalyptic in its destruction, and for those who lived through WWI, it probably did feel like the End. The movie, despite not being too action-packed, had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The tension and fear that runs through the screen is palpable and was infinitely more thrilling and nerve-wracking than any superhero or horror movie could ever be.
I'm rambling, but really, truly, watch this movie. It is beautiful and thrilling and heartbreaking, and I love it so much.
