The sets, cinematography and score are incredible. Dune sets a standard for 2021 sci-fi presentation The scale is grand in true epic fashion. For these reasons, I can't wait for it to come out on 4K UHD Blu-ray. That said, the move itself is a drag.
I never felt anything other than awe of the production. Eventually even the production gets old. I was ultimately struggling to stay interested.I get we're supposed to care about Paul's hero's journey, but unless you go into this with a nostalgic attachment to either the book or the old movie, the movie does not lead you to caring about him. He's just the generic designated savior. I found myself searching for someone or something actually care about. Ironically, everyone I found interesting dies. So after 2.5 hours of mostly empty time and space, I received the payoff... see you next year, "same bat time, same bat channel."
That non-payoff is a problem because it effectively corroborates the non-feelings I had up to that conclusion. What was the point? the problem here is the movie is not a movie at all. It is a piece of a movie. Literally everything is unfinished. I am not talking Lord of the Rings installemnt of a trilogy. No, Peter Jackson told 3 smaller stories that while supporting a grander story, each individually retained an Introduction, climax, and closure. Thus each movie is satisfying while leaving us wanting more.
Dune left me unsatisfied and I don't care if I get more. Dune is the equivalent of going out to dinner and only getting served the appetizer and a check. When you ask for the entrée, you’re told to come back tomorrow. Unsatisfying!!!
