Pattinson does a fine job as batman, but is nonexistent as Bruce Wayne. I don’t know if the director didn’t trust him to be able to play Bruce Wayne or if those scenes were cut. Whatever the reason, Bruce Wayne is barely in the movie, which is disappointing for some of us that like to see the dichotomy of both personalities.
The movie is 3 hours long, with a very slow pace. There is a lot that should have been edited out to make for a more enjoyable movie experience. I’m fine with all of it being in there for an extended version, but the theatre release should have been edited more.
There are also a few “goofy” scenes that completely took me out of the movie because I had to laugh at their ridiculousness. In particular, the chase scene in which the new bat mobile, (which is rather unimpressive in design when compared to previous movie versions), suddenly finds a ramp like structure placed right in front of it. It’s something completely out of the dukes of hazard and I could hear the general lee’s horn playing as it came flying through the fire. A couple other scenes that made me laugh because of their ridiculousness were the hordes of police officers running up stairways. It was straight out of the blues brothers.
Other than when I was laughing at the ridiculousness of these scenes, however, there was really no other laughter to be found in this movie. Everything is so devoid of laughter and happiness. I understand the director wanted a dark, brooding movie, but some levity would have at least broken the monotony of all the brooding.
All in all, it’s not a bad movie, but in the realm of batman movies this falls short when compared to movies like batman begins and dark knight.
