The spectacle is lost to the impressively bad writing. Action scenes are entertaining. Most of the show is dialogue and most of the dialogue is filler. And it’s made even more offensive by the pretentious use of vaguely old-timey sounding sentences. There was no critical editing which asked “what purpose does this scene serve”. The character’s decision’s don’t make any sense and their actions seem inconsequential. There are no clear motives or stakes. They took characters and settings from Tolkiens work, sucked the life out of it, and mashed in some blessed diversity.

There were a couple frustrating continuity issues. But at least this movie cares about it’s characters, and tries to explore the Star Wars universe in a meaningful way.

I think if you hired a writer to try to ruin Star Wars, they couldn’t have done better than Abrams.
