This book starts slow but builds the case, the Party of Lincoln is the same today, he could trust hardly any man in his Cabinet to do his job without angling to get ahead of the pack and the President in the next election. So bad they were that though Lincoln had two top hats shot through they had not even a guard to stop Wilkes Booth from shooting him at close range in the back of his head. Not many tears were shed by this sad pack of losers as they watched the failure of Reconstruction and the future of amity and Union in the following years The Republican Party, Repugnant then and now. Excellent Read.
