This book quite infuriated me. The author is incredibly talented it’s clear, but the story is something else. The major crime of this is how naive it is…I won’t spoil anything but safe to say that Jude (the main protagonist) goes through so many unrelenting and incredibly traumatic ordeals in his life and yet his attitude is one of only self loathing- no anger, no feeling that he didn’t deserve any of these things- even as an adult and (inexplicably) a high flying and highly paid attorney (how he keeps this going in the midst of such intense torment is hard to believe)
I’m listening to this on audible but think if I’d read the book with my eyes I’d have given up long ago (the narrator is pretty brilliant actually) but if I’m honest Jude, as beautiful and gentle and brilliant he is and the awful things that he has endured…he started to get on my nerves a bit…that makes me seem like a monster i know..but he was just too good and pure and apologetic all the time.. I have lived a life with my fair share of trauma and it’s not a thing where you just bow down to all that and at the same time have a hugely successful career in what is effectively, intimidating people for the defence….just weird..and beautiful in parts and strange…but ultimately naive..sorry.
