A few good scenes in an otherwise boring movie
I'm a Harry Potter fan, and this was the first "fantastic beasts" movie I saw.
I knew some of the characters and details (such as that Grindelwald was the worst wizard prior to Voldemort and that Dumbledore took him down etc.).
However, because I haven't seen the previous two movies, in the first half an hour, I was quite confused in terms of the different characters and plots.
That wasn't the movie's biggest problem.
The main issue was that while the film had a few good adventure scenes, in terms of sense of humour, complicated plots and character development (things that I came to expect from Rowling's writing), the film was seriously lacking.
**SPOILER ALERT**
The movie starts with a big problem, Dumbledore can't fight Grindelwald directly due to a magical bond between them. At the end of the movie the bond breaks, which leaves the option of the two having a final showdown - a final (and direct battle).
It seemed that the entire movie was just trying to set the setting for that later battle. One that we don't get to see in this movie.
Meaning, that this film had very little climatic scenes, and since most of the characters are not complicated or intriguing, the film is simply not that interesting.
