A horrible mess. So great a novel as Persuasion is just turned into something intolerable. They took out of line every character, every moment, every aspect of it. Anne Elliott is reconstructed in away where her more admiring characteristics are thrown away, she is not presented as sensible nor prudent, her smart thoughts and reservation are reduced to something else. Not exactly the heroine we knew. It might be appealing to a certain audience but I don’t think that the people who actually read the book will get excited about it.
And if only Anne was the only problem with this movie it would be somewhat watchable. The thing is it doesn’t end there. The connection between Wentworth and the protagonist is not as heartwarming. In this adaptation, they share many open conversations about their sentiments and their past before the love letter at the end. But it all it’s just so plain, the encounters they have add nothing to their circumstances. You don’t even care about what’s happening. And the lack of context for many of the situations presented…(or maybe not context but at least justification).
Moreover, it tries to be witty and funny, but it gets to an extend which is kind of cringe. Netflix, please stop making “classical adaptations” if this is what it means.
