Stylish, slow paced. Music, design, elegance. Plot…? well, yes, but it was really about the foregoing. I saw it in 1968 when l was just a fresh faced kid. I didnt get it. I do now.

Having just trudged through the 848 pp of DC in 4 wks for our small bookclub, and after having finished its 21st cent. analogue, Demon Copperhead, only 3 mos before l was really ready for something more light hearted and this film interpretation was it. Just such a marvellously wonderful interpretation of the essence of this Dickens classic. This innovative ensemble of Patel as David, Cepaldi as McCawber, Hugh Laurie as Mr Dick (so superb!), and Tilda Swinton as Betsy Trotwood, and all the rest of the cast ripped this classic out of 19th cent.melodrama and into the wonderful treat it truly is. Lovely film. I think l’ll view it again. Such a delight.

As everyone says this is an outstanding movie. But seeing it again decades since my first viewing l see the character differently. My stomach churns from the drunken parking meter chopping on. Luke is seeking not just death, but pain, and slow gradual obliteration, slow suicide at the hands of Other. He acts with intention to place himself in line for increasingly deadly punishment. The script is incredibly painful. How Newman managed to get inside that character’s psyche in order to play him is incredible.

Great. Michelle Yeoh geets best female lead and the award is forever retired. The movie makes yr head spin but you’ll love it.
