EDIT: The first paragraph is not trying to put the game down, it is trying to explain one of the many reasons why it is so successful. Please read the whole review.
Don't get me wrong, this game is awesome, but I think the main reason of why Animal Crossing: New Horizons really took off is because of how much we needed it. Its peaceful, non-violent atmosphere gives us a sense of security and helps us relax with how stressful our world is, especially in 2020. I mean literally, the noises of the birds and watching the sun rise and set is so calming, I could sleep to it if absolutely needed. Plus, this game came out just in time for quarantine, too.
But putting the happiness and calmness about this game aside, it still deserves the many five-star reviews it has. The graphics are incredible, especially for the Nintendo Switch, a smaller, handheld console. Plus, the game-play is beautiful with its simplicity. You kind of just go with the flow and learn on your way, and I don't know about others but I love that. You could play for hours, but wouldn't get bombarded with the reasons why you should stay when you do decide to go, and I think that's awesome. The way you can customize your home and village is so cool, too. Your home can be different than any other player's. Oh, and how the seasons and weather and time change as they do in real life with the game is so fitting. And there is just so much to explore. The characters are so unique and all have their own attributes to them, but the best part of this game for me is how you can start from the bottom and turn your swampy, bug-filled village (with the help of some villagers) into a beautiful place to tour and visit. The places to visit, though! The town hall will give you all the information you need (and sometimes there is yoga there), the convenience store is so necessary for all the things you may need to grab, and a tailor shop, and other places!
No matter what, this game will provide something to do for you. The possibilities never stop in New Horizons, whether it's making paths or helping your fellow villagers, or even reading the mail, you always can be doing something in the village.
But, if you do decide to get the game, note that AC is not as fun without online play. By yourself is just not as fun, and local play is not great for the second player, because they can't enjoy the game anywhere near as much as the island owner/first player does. Trust me, if you sort your reviews by 1 star you will find that out pretty quickly. But the heart of Animal Crossing is socialization so keep that in mind.
My conclusion is that this game is 100% worth the money for the game and online play membership. If you weren't sure about getting the game, or don't like video games, trust me, you should purchase this game. It relieves so much stress when you can get on after a long day and just fish at the pond. The experience of this game is... exceptional and phenomenal!
