This movie was pretty bad - spoilers ahead (not that anything can be spoiled about this mess)
I’ll begin by saying I really liked the original trilogy. These were the kinds of movies that are so good that when channel surfing, if I ever came across them, I would see them, no matter if the movie was halfway through. They had great action, special effects, were generally well thought out. They were entertaining and cool.
Unfortunately that is not the case here.
This movie was half baked, slapped and/or stitched together like a monster, a cautionary tale for movie goers and industry insiders alike.
Mad Max Fury road showed us that it can be done… you can build upon an existing concept, remaining true to its foundations, while at the same time explore and do something new. The thing you need is a clear vision and the ability to execute.
This movie showed neither. It was lost. The first quarter of the movie rehashing a question that has already been answered at nauseam: “what is the Matrix?”. We already know! Enough already. It’s no longer clever!
Clearly the producers faced a number of challenges. Some actors from the original trilogy were happy to come on board, some weren’t… and this seemed to dictate the story. They essentially backed themselves into a corner and didn’t try to do something new.
There was no need to have Agent Smith, the Merovingians, Sati, heck even Trinity come back (especially since she was clearly dead). Their inclusion seemed to be an attempt to pull at our nostalgia.
They just needed to come up with a better story.
The execution was terrible. It felt poor and under budget.
The original movies felt grandiose. This thing felt like a poor attempt at a “made for TV” movie.
I would not recommend watching this movie, because, ultimately it will erode on the legacy of the original trilogy, much like having a closed casket funeral so you can remember your loved ones the way they looked and not disfigured, dismembered and hacked to pieces.
It’s pretty bad…
