**Spoilers Ahead**
When going into this movie, I knew very little. When reading the reviews they were very mixed from ppl hating the animation to ppl not being comfy with a child having a same sex love interest.
But the thing is I really loved it! It focused on the father and son dynamic through three generations. The world building I thought was great along with how they designed everything, it made sense by the end.
On the topic of the plant based electricity I thought it stayed true to our own dilema of fossil fuels until recent years. Of course the world didn’t develop a different form of electricity because they thought it would last. At the very end, they show them growing out of their plant based electricity and onto other types such as wind which I enjoyed.
On the topic of the same sex relations, it’s a cute kid crush with young teenagers where they share glances and maybe two hugs. I don’t see anything wrong with it since the move is again mostly focused on parent-child dynamics. Sure the kids love interest is talked about through the dialogue and seen at the beginning and end of the movie, but don’t you all remember having that awkward conversation when your parents found out about your first big crush, this is no different.
I liked the familiarity of the storyline (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Indian Jones, etc.) where you know the kid won’t listen, where you get familial bonding, and where you already know the dad’s not dead.
I do think little kids will enjoy the cute characters and will be invested in the colors and some points of the plot. Older kids may get the dynamics and the story a bit better.
For those who like animation it’s not terrible. It’s fluent and cartoonish. The expressions of the characters are good and they don’t have dead eyes. You can tell with the little budget given to the creators that they tried.
There aren’t really any adult jokes that I noticed the first time. It is mostly targeting kids, but it is something every person can relate to since it does focus on the parent-child dynamic and being true to your morals and calling in life.
Anyway, I hope this helps and that you’ll watch it to see for yourself.
