I’m a traditionalist when it comes to book adaptations; normally I like films to be as accurate to the original story as possible. I read “The Witches” over and over as a kid and I was a little apprehensive about this new film version even though I was excited to check it out. This movie was absolutely great. The performances were excellent even if some of the digital imagine was lacking, and the two leading female characters were portrayed by some of my favorite actresses. I didn’t quite agree with how much social commentary was included, but I thought overall it was a very interesting displacement of the story’s setting and it was absolutely well done. All too often books get overly distorted or misrepresented in their film versions and I think this movie did a good job of staying true to the narrative while putting a modern twist on its perspective.
