At times moving and tenderly written, but the characterisation is weak meaning that you never care about these characters as much as you should because you don't get to know enough about them. The technique of jumbling the chronology and geography of the plot begins to grate after a while as it feels indulgent rather than necessary. The plot is also too thin to warrant a near 600 pages. Underwhelming.
