This film is artistic, gutsy and strikes a chord.
In an age where we want everything presented in a picture perfect bow we sit and criticize every last detail. And yet, we've missed the point of why Marilyn's story is being retold. We retell this story because its a vital tale of caution and tragedy as much as it is a story of someone searching for love and acceptance. It is only meant to paint a depiction of how Norma or Marilyn felt at this time, and to remind us of a period of time in Hollywood of the good old boys club. And how it might have felt to be a young woman in Hollywood at that time.
Love it or hate it, it truly evokes emotion. And at its core Ana de Armas is absolutely brilliant. I did not see or expect this from her, and that is on me for assuming 007 was the extend of her caliber. She truly captures the essence of Marilyn and how Marilyn or Norma must have felt in a mans world, searching for love. It is a story of tragedy, a perfect storm of why and how Norma became Marilyn. And for this performance she deserves nothing short of an Oscar.
And Juliana Nicholson is absolutely brilliant as her mother. In total her scenes cannot make up more than 20 minutes in the film. Yet, it completely sets the undertone of the movie and lays a foundation of how Norma became Marilyn Monroe. I found the scenes between these two actors to be electric. And to remind us that as human beings we are flawed and at our core looking for love.
I would recommend this movie to anyone and it truly deserves its accolades. We need to stop hating on someones vision. A movie is supposed to transport you to another time and place and evoke emotion. If it does that, whether you love it or hate it, then it has done its job as a film.
5 Stars. A must watch, absolutely brilliant and everyone involved with this movie should be proud.
